Kate Court House
Located within Adelaide’s eastern CBD in a designated Historic Conservation Zone, this single-storey 1880’s stone cottage has been carefully restored and sensitively extended to respect its heritage context while introducing a contemporary layer of functionality.
The two-storey extension is deliberately set back from the primary façade, ensuring the original cottage remains the visual focus from the street. Along the rear laneway, particular attention was paid to the scale and material expression of the new form. A batten-screen atrium mediates between the old and new structures—providing a gentle transition from single to double storey, while referencing the rhythm and grain of the laneway interface.
Material selection draws directly from local context, with recycled red brick and galvanised custom orb cladding echoing the surrounding laneway fabric. A sloped roof to the upper level minimises visual bulk and addresses overshadowing requirements, preserving access to sunlight for neighbouring outdoor spaces.
Inside, the extension is grounded by a warm, natural palette—blackbutt timber, terracotta tiling, and soft paperbark tones.
