Dune House
Situated within the natural landscape of Hindmarsh Island with vistas to the Coorong National Park, Dune House is conceived as a structure to be viewed in the round—its plan wrapping around a central courtyard that mediates the seasonal extremes of the coastal environment. The building responds to prevailing breezes, rainfall, and intense sunlight, offering shelter and openness in equal measure.
Large expanses of glazing frame uninterrupted views of the surrounding dunes, sky, and river, immersing visitors in the unique beauty of the site. Internally, the wet areas feature brightly coloured tiles, each hue drawn from the local landscape—the lilac of seasonal wildflowers, the greens of native dune grasses, and the blue tones of the sky and water—bringing a playful and place-specific vibrancy to the interior.
The external form and materials of the house are grounded in rural vernacular architecture, referencing farming typologies such as shearing sheds and woolsheds. Corrugated metal cladding, exposed hardwood framing, raised timber decks, perimeter verandahs, openable shutters, and natural timber cladding—intended to silver gracefully over time—give the house a quiet resilience and deep connection to place.
