Dover Street House
Set on a compact block in Maylands, this 1920s bungalow underwent an extensive renovation to better accommodate the needs of a young family, with a focus on functionality, light, and spatial efficiency. While the home was significantly reconfigured, the addition itself remained modest—prioritising the preservation of valuable garden areas and outdoor space.
With a south-facing rear yard, natural light was introduced through a series of skylights and carefully placed slot windows, illuminating the new living spaces and offsetting the site’s orientation. Ceiling voids within the existing roof were opened up to create tall ceilings, enhancing volume and airiness throughout the home.
Smart spatial planning drove the interior design: a banquette seat anchors the dining area, providing built-in flexibility, while a galley kitchen with a large sliding servery window connects indoors to out, maximising both function and flow within a compact footprint.
This project is a sensitive balance of preservation and transformation—retaining the charm of the original bungalow while adapting it for contemporary family living.
